£2m Funding for Cleveland Police in England After Fatal Crash

Cleveland Police in England will receive a £2 million funding boost. The money will help fight serious crime in Middlesbrough.

Leaders announced the funding in Parliament on Tuesday. It follows a fatal A66 crash on August 22.

A pursued car drove the wrong way and crashed. The crash killed constables Matthew Blades and Tom Clough and five others.

Police said the five others may have links to organized crime. A house fire in Grangetown on August 26 also happened.

The fire killed 34-year-old Natalie McDonald and her seven-year-old niece Valentina Foster. Four other people were injured and a man was charged.

Police said the fire was not linked to the crash. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the tragedies caused unease in the community.

She said the funding will support police after the crash. Mahmood and Prime Minister Andy Burnham praised the two officers in Parliament.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said the £2 million was not enough. He cited a reported £2.4 million funding shortfall.
