32 Convicted Over 2018 Genoa Bridge Collapse in Italy
A court in Genoa, Italy convicted 32 people over the 2018 Morandi Bridge collapse. The collapse killed 43 people.
Giovanni Castellucci was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was the former chief executive of Autostrade per l'Italia.
That company managed the bridge. In total 57 people were tried over the disaster.
Another 25 people were acquitted or cleared. Former maintenance chief Michele Donferri Mitelli was sentenced to 11 years.
Former company leader Paolo Berti was sentenced to 5.5 years. Castellucci is already serving a separate six-year sentence.
That earlier sentence was for a fatal 2013 accident. He was not present in court for this ruling.
His lawyers say they will appeal. They argue an undetected construction defect caused the collapse.
They say it was not a maintenance failure. Italy's deputy transport secretary called the ruling an important step toward justice.
