Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla have been re-elected as leaders of the Alternative for Germany party. The vote took place at a party conference in Erfurt, Germany.

Weidel won with 81% of the delegate vote. Chrupalla received 70% support.

Tens of thousands of people protested the event. Protesters tried to block the conference and stop delegates from entering.

Thousands of police were sent to manage the protests. Riot police clashed with opponents of the party during the protests.

Authorities had expected up to 50,000 protesters. Delegates were escorted by police before 4am to avoid blockades.

The conference drew extra attention for another reason. It took place near the 100-year anniversary of a Nazi Party meeting that helped Hitler gain power.

Historians and opponents pointed to this link. The AfD rejected the comparison.
