AMD to Buy AI Start-up World Labs
AMD plans to buy World Labs. World Labs is an AI start-up.
Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as chief scientist. She is known as the Godmother of AI.
The deal covers both the purchase and her new role. AMD valued the deal at $8.2 billion.
But the Financial Times reported a price of $8 billion. The purchase should close by the end of 2026.
It still needs regulatory approval. AMD says World Labs' research will shape its AI hardware.
It will also help AMD's software and systems. This aims to support new types of AI work.
World Labs was founded by a Stanford University researcher. It builds AI models that understand 3D environments.
These models can also generate and reconstruct 3D spaces. They could be used in robotics, simulation and design.
Klear Note — 3D-aware AI helps machines interpret spaces, which can aid robotics and simulation.
