Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister After Starmer

Andy Burnham became the new UK prime minister today. He replaces Keir Starmer in the role.

Starmer went to Buckingham Palace first to resign. Burnham then went separately to meet King Charles.

The King invited him to form a government. They did not meet the King together.

Burnham had already become leader of the Labour party on Friday. That happened before he became prime minister.

Burnham is the seventh UK prime minister in a decade. He is the fourth since 2022.

He is the 59th prime minister overall. Burnham used to be mayor of Greater Manchester.

Some people call him the King of the North. He said he wants to bring back hope to the country.

His biggest challenge will be convincing voters that Labour can bring stability. Burnham will now go to Downing Street to choose his cabinet.
