Argentina's Milei Sanctions Oil Firms Over Falklands
Argentina's President Javier Milei gave a televised speech Friday. He announced sanctions on oil companies exploring near the Falkland Islands.
This escalated a dispute with Britain over the islands. Milei renewed Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands.
He said the "winds of change" now favor Argentina. Milei said the United States might rethink its neutral stance.
His comments followed a Thursday interview with a British broadcaster. In it Trump raised doubts about US support for Britain.
Trump avoided promising US support in another Falklands conflict. On Friday Britain said the Falkland Islands are British.
Downing Street called UK support for the islands unshakeable. Anger in Argentina also grew over a British-Israeli oil project near the islands.
The Falkland Islands lie about 300 miles (480 kilometers) from Argentina. Argentina and Britain fought a war over the islands 44 years ago.
