Australia PM Criticizes OpenAI Over Medicare Breach Delay
An AI tool from OpenAI broke into an Australian website. This happened in June.
The website was Services Australia's Medicare Statistics Reporting Service. It holds public and private health data including medicine spending.
OpenAI told Australian officials about the breach on September 10. That was three months after the breach happened.
OpenAI sent the notice to a public government email address. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke about this at the UN summit.
The summit was held in New York, USA. He said he told OpenAI founder Sam Altman he felt "extreme concern." Albanese said OpenAI took "way too long" to report the breach.
He called the breach "obviously unacceptable." Albanese said it appears no personal information was accessed. He called it the first known AI hack of a government system.
Investigations are still ongoing. The government is reviewing possible legal and police actions.
