Avalanche Sign Makar to Record NHL Contract
The Colorado Avalanche signed defenseman Cale Makar to a new contract. The deal is worth $163.2 million over eight years.
This makes Makar the highest-paid player in NHL history. The contract is also the largest in NHL history.
Makar's new deal starts after his current contract ends. His current deal has one year left.
The new contract keeps him with Colorado through the 2034-35 season. Makar had signed an earlier deal in 2021.
That deal was six years for $54 million. Makar has won the Stanley Cup with Colorado. He has also won the Norris Trophy twice.
Klear Note — A contract extension adds future seasons after a player's current deal ends. Defensemen primarily help stop opposing attacks and move the puck forward.
