Avalanche Traps Skiers in Northern California
Search and rescue crews are looking for backcountry skiers missing after an avalanche in Northern California. A powerful winter storm is moving through the state.
The storm brought the coldest air in three years. Heavy snow and ice created dangerous conditions.
UC Berkeley's Central Sierra Snow Lab near Donner Pass reported 28 inches of snow on Tuesday. Another 3 feet of snow are expected in the next two days.
Highway I-80 is closed from Colfax to Nevada. Other areas in California face heavy rain and flooding.
Klear Note — Backcountry skiing means skiing in unmarked mountain areas without patrols. Avalanches happen when heavy snow slides down mountains suddenly. Winter storms create dangerous conditions for skiers and travelers.
