Belfast Riots Enter Second Night After Knife Attack

Riots in Belfast, Northern Ireland entered a second night. Police were attacked with bricks, bottles and wood at a roundabout north-west of the city.

Officers used a water cannon in response. Reports say unrest spread to other parts of Northern Ireland and to cities in England and Scotland.

This happened despite leaders and communities speaking out against the violence. Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese man, was charged with attempted murder over the knife attack.

He also faced charges of carrying a knife and threatening to kill a health worker. In court Alodid declined legal help and said nothing in reply to the charges.

The charges were read to him through an Arabic interpreter. The victim Stephen Ogilvie lost his left eye and suffered damage to his right eye.

His family asked the public to stay calm. They urged people not to use the attack to divide communities.

Klear Note Belfast has a history of sectarian violence between communities. Knife attacks sometimes trigger wider unrest in the city.
