Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs Up to 50% on US Goods

Canada announced new tariffs on US goods. The tariffs will affect over 700 items.

Rates will be 15%, 25% or 50%. Total value is C$27.6 billion or about US$20 billion.

Canada said the move matches US tariff rates. It follows President Trump's 50% tariffs on many Canadian goods.

The two countries are in an ongoing trade dispute. Canada's new tariffs start September 8 2026.

Canada also announced help for affected workers and businesses. Leaders asked Canadians to buy local products.

This was meant to support domestic industries. Trade talks between Canada and the US broke down Friday.

After that Trump threatened more tariffs. Trump called Canada the "most difficult" country he deals with. He denied claims that talks failed partly over French language protections.
