Canada Pushes to Renew Trade Deal With US and Mexico

Canada wants to renew a major trade deal with the US and Mexico. The deal is called USMCA.

Canada wants it renewed for 16 more years. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc sent a letter to his US and Mexican counterparts asking for this.

He visited Washington on Tuesday to meet with the US Trade Representative. All three countries face a deadline of July 1, 2026.

By then each must say whether to renew USMCA for 16 years or do yearly reviews instead. Sources say the US is unlikely to agree to a full 16-year renewal.

The US has so far held formal USMCA review talks only with Mexico. Meanwhile President Trump again called Canada the '51st state.' He used that term hours before the trade talks were set to begin.

Klear Note USMCA is a trade deal between US, Canada, and Mexico. It replaced NAFTA in 2020. The deal sets rules for buying and selling goods between the three countries.
