Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney made a new promise. He said Canada will match US tariffs dollar for dollar.

This follows failed trade talks between the United States and Canada. The two countries missed their deadline of midnight Friday.

Carney accused the United States of making unfair last-minute changes. Those changes would have avoided 50% import taxes.

He said the deal being offered was bad for Canada. So Carney walked away from the deal.

He suspended negotiations and called back Canada's negotiating team. Talks had been extended for three days before this.

Both sides had reported good progress during that time. But the deal was never signed before the deadline.

New US tariffs started early Saturday. They target about $20 billion of Canadian goods.
