China Coal Mine Blast Kills at Least 90 People

A gas explosion killed at least 90 people at a coal mine in China. It happened Friday at 7:29pm at the Liushenyu mine in Shanxi province.

This is China's worst mining disaster in 16 to 17 years. There were 247 workers underground when the blast happened.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged authorities to spare no effort in the rescue. Mine leaders were detained after the blast.

A carbon monoxide alert had reportedly been issued shortly before the explosion. The mine was listed in 2024 among over 1,000 mines with serious safety problems.
