China Evacuates 900000 People Before Typhoon Bavi
More than 900000 people were evacuated in China as Typhoon Bavi got closer. Most evacuations happened in Wenzhou and other parts of Zhejiang province.
Others were evacuated in northern China including Beijing. Wenzhou leaders said 887801 people had left by late Friday.
More than 100000 more were evacuated further north. This happened as the Miyun Reservoir released more water.
Typhoon Bavi was expected to reach land in China early Sunday. Before nearing China Bavi hit northern Taiwan and southwestern islands in Japan on Saturday.
It knocked down trees and cut power for tens of thousands of people. Taiwan's weather agency recorded winds of 137 kilometers per hour as the storm passed the island.
Wind gusts reached up to 173 kilometers per hour. Bavi also brought strong winds and rain to Japan's southern islands.
Earlier the typhoon caused deadly landslides in the Philippines. The death toll from these landslides has risen to 18 people. Most deaths happened on the southern island of Mindanao.
