Colorado Governor Cuts Former Clerk's Prison Sentence

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has reduced the prison sentence of Tina Peters. Peters was a county clerk convicted of letting unauthorized people access voting systems.

This happened after the 2020 election. She had been serving a nine-year sentence.

Polis reduced it to about four years and four months. This makes her eligible for parole on June 1, 2026.

It is a reduction not a full release. A Colorado appeals court had already ordered a new sentencing in April 2026.

The court had First Amendment concerns about her original sentence. Polis said First Amendment concerns also drove his decision.

He said the Trump administration's pressure did not influence him. But the Trump administration had pushed Polis to free Peters before his decision.

This commutation was one of nine Polis issued that same day. He also issued 35 pardons that day. Critics including election officials and fellow Democrats warned the move puts election officials at risk.
