Congress Plans to End Homeland Security Shutdown
House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate leader John Thune announced a plan Wednesday. They want to end the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
Democrats want to fund Homeland Security. But not ICE or Border Patrol.
Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats did not change their position. Republican leaders agreed to move forward with a funding deal.
Congress must still vote to pass it. Votes may happen after members return from a two-week break.
Klear Note — A government shutdown stops agencies from working when Congress can't agree on funding. The Department of Homeland Security runs border and immigration enforcement.
