Canada's defense minister said Saturday that people were killed and injured. The incident happened at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.

The incident caused a major fire. Canada's Department of National Defence said the fire began.

It started in the base's training area. This happened at about 4 p.m. local time on October 17.

The fire spread beyond that area. Emergency services responded.

Details about the dead and injured are held until relatives are told. Reports say strong winds helped the fire spread beyond the base.

Officials had not given a cause or death toll. They described the situation as “very active and delicate.”
