Early Results Show Alberta Voters Reject Separation Process
Alberta voters in Canada rejected a plan to start a legal process. That process could lead to a later binding vote on separation.
The vote was not a direct vote on independence. Voters chose whether Alberta should remain a province or begin that process.
More than 1.5 million votes were counted in unofficial Elections Alberta results. Results showed 76% supported remaining in Canada.
Close to 24% backed beginning the process toward separation. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the early results.
He said the results showed Albertans voted to remain part of Canada. The separation question was one of 10 questions on the ballot.
News coverage described the result as a boost to Carney's national-unity effort. The result came amid trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
