European Union regulators fined Google 890 million euros under the Digital Markets Act. The fine covers two separate violations.

It includes 460 million euros for self-preferencing in search results. It also includes 430 million euros for a separate Google Play app store violation.

The European Commission accused Google of anti-competitive business practices. Regulators said Google favored its own shopping and hotel deals over competitors' listings.

Reports say the self-preferencing also extended to transportation and sports listings in search results. As part of the penalty, the Commission ordered Google to treat third-party services fairly.

Search results must now be non-discriminatory toward competitors. The Digital Markets Act is an EU law.

It regulates large tech platforms and aims to ensure fair competition in digital markets. The ruling caps an investigation the Commission launched in March 2024.

Google has said it may challenge the fines in court. The Commission separately noted that Google's compliance efforts have been constructive. It cited Google's testing of changes to how search results display shopping and flight listings.
