EU Says Meta Broke Child Safety Law
The European Commission found Meta broke EU law on Wednesday. The finding came after a nearly two-year check into Meta's platforms.
Regulators say Meta failed to stop children under 13 from using Facebook and Instagram. Meta did not have strong enough controls to check users' birth dates.
Children could create accounts by entering a false birth date. Meta pushed back and said it disagrees with the findings.
The company says it has ways to find and remove under-13 accounts. If the findings are confirmed Meta could face fines of up to 6% of its global revenue.
Klear Note — The EU has strict rules protecting children online. Meta owns Facebook and Instagram, used by billions worldwide.
