High-temperature warnings covered western, central and southern Europe on Monday. This happened as a heat dome intensified across the continent.

Slovakia reached 42.2C. Hungary hit a peak of 41.8C.

That beat Hungary's previous record set in 1905. Overnight temperatures stayed above 28C in some areas.

This marked what scientists call a tropical night. Europe is now bracing for another heat wave.

France expects its fifth heat wave alert this season. French temperatures have repeatedly risen since May.

Drought and wildfires are getting worse across the continent. Western Europe's average temperature for June and July hit a record 21.62C.

Scientists said high pressure and dry soil worsened the heat. Human-caused warming also made these extremes more intense.
