European Diesel Prices Surge Amid US Export Ban Fears
Diesel prices in Europe jumped compared to prices in the United States. Traders reacted to a possible US export ban by President Trump.
European prices rose while US prices weakened. This widened the gap between the two markets.
On September 22 Trump supported limiting US diesel exports. Leaders were still checking if a full or partial ban was possible.
On September 23 a White House official spoke out. The official denied a 90-day ban was being planned.
Europe does not produce enough diesel on its own. It relies heavily on diesel shipped from the US Gulf Coast.
Analysts warned a ban could worsen shortages and raise prices in Europe. European supplies were already tight.
This was because of lost shipments from the Middle East. Russian export limits also reduced supply.
Analysts said a ban might briefly lower US prices. But it could disrupt US refineries and worsen the global shortage.
