FCC Reviews ABC Licenses Over Disney Policies

US regulators have ordered a review of 8 ABC TV station licenses. The stations are owned by Disney.

The Federal Communications Commission said the review is linked to Disney's diversity and inclusion policies. Regulators say they are looking for possible unlawful discrimination.

This type of early review had not happened in decades. The licenses were not due for renewal until 2028 at the earliest.

The review follows a joke made by ABC host Jimmy Kimmel. He said Melania Trump had 'a glow like an expectant widow.' Melania Trump called the joke 'hateful and violent rhetoric.' President Trump then told ABC to fire Kimmel.

Kimmel defended the joke on his Monday night show. He said it was commentary on the president's age.

Disney said it is confident it meets all FCC rules. The company said it will prove that through legal channels.

Democrats and free speech groups criticized the review. They say it is government retaliation against a broadcaster.

Klear Note TV stations need FCC licenses to broadcast. The FCC can review licenses early if it suspects rule violations. Early reviews are rare and usually happen during normal renewal periods.
