Fire at Algeria Orphanage Kills 11 People

A fire at an orphanage in Algiers province Algeria killed 11 people. The fire also injured 19 others.

The orphanage was near the capital city. The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. local time.

It happened in the Mohammadia district. Most victims appear to be children.

Authorities have not released their ages. Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was on a trip to Berlin, Germany.

He expressed condolences over the fire. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited injured people in the hospital.

The fire happened during a severe heatwave. The heatwave has reportedly sparked hundreds of fires across Algeria recently.
