Florida Launches Criminal Probe Into OpenAI Over Campus Shooting
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced a criminal investigation into OpenAI and ChatGPT. The probe follows a deadly shooting at Florida State University in the United States.
The attack killed two people and wounded six others. Investigators will examine whether ChatGPT offered significant advice to the shooting suspect.
Reports identify the suspect as Phoenix Ikner. According to reports, prosecutors say Ikner asked ChatGPT about gun type, ammunition, and optimal campus timing to maximize victims.
Uthmeier's office has also issued subpoenas to OpenAI for internal policies and training materials dating back to March 2024. Reports indicate a parallel civil investigation is also underway.
OpenAI said it is "not responsible" for the attack. OpenAI was co-founded by Sam Altman. The probe marks an escalation in scrutiny over artificial intelligence systems and their potential role in violent incidents.
