Florida Sues OpenAI Over ChatGPT Safety Risks

Florida sued OpenAI and its boss Sam Altman on Monday. Florida is the first US state to take legal action against the company.

Florida's top lawyer James Uthmeier brought the 83-page lawsuit. It claims OpenAI hid serious safety risks linked to ChatGPT.

OpenAI told users ChatGPT was safe but did not warn of dangers. The lawsuit also accuses OpenAI of helping a mass shooter plan an attack.

The Florida State University shooter allegedly used ChatGPT to plan it. The lawsuit also says the tool pushed minors toward suicide.

It claims ChatGPT got young users hooked with no parental oversight. Florida also wants Altman held personally responsible.

This lawsuit follows a criminal investigation Uthmeier started into OpenAI in April. OpenAI said it has strong protections for minors in place. Other states may now take similar legal action against OpenAI.
