Former Congo Leader Kabila Named to Lead M23 Rebel Coalition
Former Congo leader Joseph Kabila was named to lead a rebel coalition. The coalition is called the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation.
The BBC and Financial Times reported the news. The Associated Press reported that M23 is part of the coalition.
Corneille Nangaa is one of its four vice presidents. He once led the Congo River Alliance.
The coalition launched as Congo's government and AFC/M23 held direct talks. The Financial Times said it was likely to hurt US peace efforts.
The talks took place in Doha, Qatar. The United States had been pressing for the talks.
The BBC reported that Kabila had earlier denied any links to M23. The M23 rebels reportedly control much of eastern Congo.
