France and Germany Question Russia Over Cyberattacks
France and Germany summoned Russian ambassadors over alleged cyberattacks. The cyberattacks reportedly hit nine to ten European countries.
Targets reportedly included Poland Cyprus Netherlands Austria Slovakia Romania and Finland. France will also punish nine people and four groups linked to Russia's FSB spy agency.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the attacks aimed to steal information or cause damage. He gave railway systems in Poland as one example.
The summons came as tensions grow over the war in Ukraine. President Macron hosted leaders in Paris for talks on military support.
The talks also covered possible peace negotiations after recent Ukrainian gains. Separately Russia suspended shipping in the Sea of Azov.
The suspension followed Ukrainian drone attacks on 90 ships in less than a week. The European Union's top diplomat said there is no agreement yet on new Russian sanctions.
The EU is working to finalize a 21st package of sanctions against Russia. The bloc may also add more names to its existing sanctions list.
