France Detects First Human Shamonda Virus Case
France has found the first human case of Shamonda virus. The BBC said the patient died in early October.
Authorities are checking whether the virus caused or helped cause the death. The patient had a severely weakened immune system.
Authorities say there is no risk to the general public. Authorities suspect the infection may have followed a midge bite.
The bite happened in eastern France. The virus was detected in cattle in France in summer 2026.
Klear Note — Shamonda virus usually affects cattle.
