France Offers 3,000 Teachers as Student Protests Continue

Edouard Geffray is France's education minister. He offered 3,000 extra teachers to calm student protests across France.

France 24 described them as substitute teachers. The minister plans to send them to struggling high schools within hours.

Le Monde reported Friday October 9 that 141 high schools remained closed. Le Monde also said the 3,000 teachers were being contacted.

Student protests continued on Thursday with more clashes between protesters and police. The British Broadcasting Corporation described another day of sometimes violent unrest.

Students have complained about absent teachers, packed schedules and run-down school buildings. The plan focuses on high schools most affected by staff shortages.
