Francis Halzen Wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics

Francis Halzen won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics. He was announced as the winner on Tuesday in Stockholm, Sweden.

The award recognized his work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. It also recognized the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from space.

Neutrinos are tiny cosmic particles. They offer clues about how the universe changed over time.

They rarely interact with matter. IceCube uses light sensors to detect neutrinos. The sensors sit in one cubic kilometre of ice at the South Pole.

Klear Note — The Nobel Prize in Physics honors major contributions to the field.
Key Terms 3
  • Neutrinos Tiny particles from space that rarely interact with other matter.
  • IceCube Neutrino Observatory A science site at the South Pole that detects neutrinos in ice.
