French Soldier Killed in Lebanon Attack

A French soldier was killed in an attack in southern Lebanon on Saturday. Three other French soldiers were wounded.

Two of them were seriously hurt. The soldiers were clearing a road when the attack happened.

French President Emmanuel Macron blamed the armed group Hezbollah for the attack. UNIFIL peacekeepers and French leaders also said Hezbollah was likely responsible.

But Hezbollah said it had no connection to the attack. Macron called the attack unacceptable.

He spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. UNIFIL called it a deliberate attack that may amount to war crimes.

Klear Note UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon. France has soldiers there as part of this mission. Hezbollah is an armed group based in Lebanon.
