Ghana Parliament Passes Law Against LGBTQ Promotion
Ghana's parliament passed a law against LGBTQ promotion. The law gives prison sentences of 3 to 5 years for promoting or supporting LGBTQ activities.
A separate penalty of up to 3 years applies to same-sex relations. Lawyers, journalists and medical workers are exempt from the law.
President John Mahama must now sign it before it takes effect. An earlier version passed in 2024 but lapsed when the previous president left office without signing it.
Klear Note — Ghana is a West African country. LGBTQ rights laws vary widely across Africa. Some countries have decriminalized same-sex relations while others have strict penalties.
