Gloria Steinem Dies at 92 at New York Home

Gloria Steinem died Wednesday at her New York City home. She was 92 years old.

Steinem was a feminist writer, journalist, author, magazine publisher, fundraiser and activist. She became a leading voice in the US women's movement.

Her foundation said she died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Her cause of death was not announced.

Steinem challenged unfair ideas about gender throughout her career. She helped women gain self-worth and more equality.

This included equality at work, at home and in society. At that time women had few roles outside the home.

Steinem supported feminist ideals like equality, sisterhood and reproductive freedom. Her work helped change attitudes about women's rights over generations.

She co-founded Ms. magazine as a feminist publication. She gained attention in 1963 for investigating Playboy Bunny working conditions.

Her support for reproductive rights came partly from an illegal abortion. She had that abortion at age 22.

Klear Note — Feminism supports equal rights and opportunities for women and men. Reproductive freedom means making personal decisions about pregnancy without unfair limits.
