Guinea Landslide at Conakry Landfill Kills 30 People
A landslide hit a waste dump in Conakry, Guinea. It happened early Sunday after heavy rain.
The rain caused a mound of waste to collapse. The landslide killed 30 people.
Six others were seriously injured. Sixteen people suffered light injuries.
The dump is called Dar es Salam. It is Conakry's largest landfill.
The collapse damaged nearby tents, shacks and homes. Rain began around 2 a.m. that day.
The landfill was due to close later that day. Last Thursday Minister Djenab Toure announced the closure.
She said the site was dangerous during the rainy season. Leaders planned to move the waste outside Conakry. Toure had earlier promised to move the dump.
