Gunmen Attack Niger Airport for Second Time This Year
Gunmen attacked the main airport in Niamey, Niger's capital, on Wednesday. Gunfire and explosions lasted over an hour.
The attack began at around 6am local time. Security forces blocked off the area.
It is not yet clear if anyone was hurt. No group has said it carried out the attack.
The same airport was attacked in January 2026. That attack was claimed by the Islamic State Sahel Province.
It involved over 30 gunmen using drones, mortars and small arms. Both the civilian airport and the nearby Air Base 101 were targeted then. Niger has been fighting a militant Islamist insurgency for a decade.
Klear Note — Niger faces attacks from militant groups fighting for years. The Islamic State Sahel Province claimed the January airport attack. These groups want to destabilize the government and control territory.
