Hawaii Avoids Direct Hit but Hurricane Lala Persists
Hawaii narrowly avoided a direct hit from Hurricane Lala. The storm passed south of Hawaii's Big Island without landfall.
Still strong winds and heavy rain hit the region. Lala caused widespread flooding, mudslides and power outages.
These problems affected islands across Hawaii. Authorities are urging residents to shelter in place.
This is because dangerous conditions continue as Lala moves west. If Lala makes landfall it would be historic. That would be Hawaii's first direct hurricane hit in 34 years.
