Hawk Fire Threatens Reno, Nevada, as 90,000 Urged to Evacuate
A fast-moving wildfire called the Hawk fire is threatening Reno, Nevada. Authorities urged about 90,000 people to evacuate.
More than 40,000 people evacuated and another 45,000 got warnings. The fire destroyed homes in northwest Reno on Sunday.
It jumped over fire trucks. This made it hard for crews to reach hot spots.
Shifting winds also slowed efforts to control the fire. Officials sent 800 firefighters to fight the blaze.
So far the fire is zero percent contained. Six people were injured including three responders.
The fire started Saturday near Peavine Peak in Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It has grown to more than 23 square miles.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency. He activated National Guard help including helicopters and 60 troops.
Officials said the fire was human-caused. They have not said if it was set intentionally.
