Hurricane Polo Nears Baja California Sur, Mexico

Hurricane Polo was approaching Baja California Sur, Mexico, on Monday. It could make landfall on the Baja California Peninsula.

A second landfall was expected in northwestern mainland Mexico. This could happen late Monday or early Tuesday.

The National Hurricane Center listed Polo as a Category 3 storm. It reported winds of 115 mph in its Monday update.

Earlier reports had described Polo as a Category 4 storm. The storm could reach major-hurricane strength near Baja California Sur.

Forecasters warned of life-threatening winds and storm surge. They also warned of flash flooding and mudslides.

Conditions in Baja California Sur could worsen Monday morning. Residents and authorities were preparing for the storm's impacts.

Interaction with land and wind shear should weaken Polo. Still it was expected to remain a hurricane at its second landfall.

Klear Note — Storm surge is storm-driven seawater that can flood coastal areas.
