India Court Gives 10 Years to Former Editor for Rape
An Indian court sentenced Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison. He was convicted of raping a junior colleague.
Tejpal is 63 years old. He founded Tehelka, an investigative news magazine.
The court also gave him shorter sentences for related charges. These will run at the same time as the main sentence.
The case began with a 2013 incident in Goa, India. Tejpal was accused of raping a journalist in a hotel elevator.
He was first acquitted in 2021. But that acquittal was later overturned leading to this conviction.
Tejpal has denied the accusations. He called the verdict a case of political revenge.
He said he is confident the evidence will clear him. Reports say he was given a short time to surrender. He can appeal the verdict in India's Supreme Court.
