India's education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday. His resignation followed weeks of student protests.

Students said exams were leaked and the education system was unfair. Pradhan gave his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The protests included nationwide demonstrations called "Cockroach" marches. One activist held a 26-day hunger strike demanding Pradhan quit.

Students said the movement targeted deep problems in India's education system. Reports call this the biggest concession yet from the government.

It is seen as a win for one of India's largest student movements in years. Pradhan said he did not want "anti-national forces" using the protests against students.

He said he did not want students facing legal trouble instead of studying. Earlier reports said police used batons and tear gas against protesters.

More than 100 people were badly hurt in those clashes. The protests are described as the biggest challenge to Modi's rule in his third term.
