Indian Police Detain Protesters During Rally Crackdown
Police detained thousands of protesters in Delhi, India, on Saturday. Authorities locked down parts of Delhi to stop a planned rally.
The rally demanded the resignation of India's election chief. France 24 reported more than 2,000 detainees.
CBC and Euronews also reported thousands. The youth "Cockroach" movement wanted to step up a nationwide campaign.
The campaign opposes a voter-list revision. That issue is behind its protests, CBC reported.
Reports say the revision has angered election officials and the government. Police also detained movement founder Abhijeet Dipke.
Euronews reported two others were detained with him. The Financial Times reported Dipke was escorted off a flight.
This happened during the crackdown. But hundreds of protesters defied the security clampdown in New Delhi.
