Indonesia Halts Operations at Eight Airports After Volcano Eruption
The Anak Krakatau volcano erupted in Indonesia early Sunday. It sent volcanic ash into the country's airspace.
Ash was detected near Jakarta, Indonesia and drifted across western Indonesia. Indonesia halted operations at eight airports on Sunday.
This included Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. All flights at that airport were canceled.
Other domestic airports also faced disruptions. Leaders said 1,558 flights were canceled overall.
UPI reported 170,000 passengers were stranded at airports. The BBC reported more than 170,000 stranded passengers.
Saturday's eruption produced lava and loud booming sounds. Indonesia's geology agency said sounds were heard 435 miles (700 kilometers) away.
The eruption also interrupted some school activities and fishing. Volcanic activity had increased since July.
A 2018 eruption of the volcano caused a tsunami. The tsunami killed at least 430 people.
