Iran Offers Peace Deal Without Nuclear Terms

The United States and Israel went to war with Iran on February 28. Iran has now offered to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

But Iran does not want to discuss its nuclear program as part of the deal. Pakistan passed Iran's offer to the United States.

The United States showed little interest in the offer. US leaders say any deal must include an agreement on Iran's nuclear program.

Secretary of State Rubio said Iran's nuclear program is the key issue. He declined the offer.

Trump also appears unlikely to accept it. Trump cancelled a planned trip by his envoys to Pakistan over the weekend.

This suggests the United States is taking a harder position. Still the White House has not fully ruled out Iran's offer.

Control of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program are the two main issues in peace talks. Those talks are now stalled.

Iran's Foreign Minister Araghchi travelled to Oman and then Moscow to meet Putin. Sources say he was seeking Russian support after the Pakistan talks stalled.

A ceasefire remains in effect after Trump extended it. But both sides have kept up military activity near the Strait of Hormuz.

Klear Note The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. About one-third of world's oil passes through it. Iran's nuclear program has been a major issue in US-Iran relations for decades.
