Irish Police Charge Woman Over Car Bomb Near Border
Irish police stopped a car bomb near the Northern Ireland border. The bomb was found during a check on dissident republicans.
Dissident republicans are groups who reject Northern Ireland's peace deal. A woman in her 20s was charged in connection with the device.
She is due in court on Friday evening. A police chief warned that radicalized republicans are ready to carry out attacks.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly called the seizure extremely significant. Garda is the name of Ireland's police force.
He said the device had a power unit, detonator and military-grade explosives. It was meant to be placed under a car for an attack in Northern Ireland.
Kelly said police are working closely with the PSNI and UK intelligence services. The PSNI is Northern Ireland's police force.
He said two other car bomb incidents happened in Northern Ireland this year. One bomb exploded outside a Belfast police station in April.
