Israel Approves West Bank Control Expansion
Israel's security cabinet approved new measures on Sunday. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Defence Minister Israel Katz announced the plans.
The measures affect property law, planning, and licensing. They also change how rules are enforced.
The changes make it easier to seize Palestinian land. Palestinians say the measures amount to taking control without official announcement. Palestinians also say the changes essentially legalize Israeli settlements.
Klear Note — The West Bank is Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967. Israeli settlements there are considered illegal under international law. Palestinians oppose expansion that reduces their land and self-rule.
