Ivory Coast Floods Kill Nearly 60 People
Floods in Ivory Coast have killed at least 59 people since May. The rainy season has only just begun.
Leaders fear the death toll will rise further. Search operations are still ongoing.
The worst-hit areas are in Abidjan. Fast city growth and informal housing in flood-prone areas made the death toll worse.
Neighboring Ghana has also seen deadly floods. At least 12 people died there. This is now a wider regional crisis.
Klear Note — Ivory Coast's rainy season runs May through October. Heavy rains cause annual flooding in West Africa. Poor drainage in crowded cities makes floods more deadly.
