James Cleverly Quits Shadow Cabinet to Run for London Mayor
James Cleverly resigned from Britain's shadow cabinet. He plans to run for mayor of London.
His resignation took effect immediately. Before quitting he was shadow minister for housing, communities and local government.
He previously served as home secretary and foreign secretary. Cleverly plans to make his case to Conservative Party members.
This will happen at the party conference in October. He said leaving the shadow cabinet lets him focus fully on the campaign.
London will not vote for a new mayor until 2028. Sadiq Khan is halfway through his third term as mayor. Khan has not said if he will seek a fourth term.
Klear Note — A shadow cabinet is an opposition party’s team for monitoring government departments.
