Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama Dies at 97

Yayoi Kusama's studio announced her death on Thursday. The Japanese artist was 97 years old.

She died in a Tokyo hospital on 14 August. Reports say the cause was multiple organ failure.

But the official announcement did not state a cause. Kusama worked from the 1950s to the 2020s.

She made paintings, sculptures and large installations. Her work often drew on her hallucinations.

In the 1960s her polka-dot paintings and sculptures drew attention. This happened in New York City and Europe.

She also held public performances there. Her work included pieces called self-obliteration and polka-dotted nudes.

Kusama returned to Japan in 1973. She entered a psychiatric hospital around 1977.

She lived there for decades while working nearby. She also wrote fiction and poetry.

Klear Note — Installations are artworks arranged across spaces, rather than shown as single objects. Hallucinations are sights or sounds that seem real without an outside source.
